Native to Europe and Africa, English sparrows were introduced to the United States from Europe. Eight pairs were released in New York in 1854.

Currently, populations of English sparrows are found in all states except Alaska, where it is too cold for them.

English sparrows are rarely found away from humans and are especially good at adapting to new habitats that are created by human activities.
