This
lady beetle is an effective biological control agent of many different
insect pests on a wide variety of ornamental and agricultural
crops. Its population increases rapidly when prey are abundant,
apparently because native ladybugs are unable to compete and because
few natural enemies are present in the United States.
The multicolored
Asian lady beetle is an efficient predator of aphids, as well
as scale insects and psyllids. An adult is capable of consuming
as many as 270 aphids per day, and a single larva can consume
between 600 and 1,200 aphids during its development.
This
species has greatly benefited the pecan industry by controlling
the pecan aphid.
