The main methods of control for the Asian
tiger mosquito involve either the application of insecticides or
elimination of breeding areas. People can use screens, nets, and
repellents to protect themselves from bites.
Larvae
management includes using larvicides and eliminating breeding areas
by improving water drainage and night spraying of swampy areas.
The mosquitofish, another exotic species, has been introduced to
some areas to consume mosquito larvae. Adult mosquitoes are controlled
with insecticide sprays.
The
Public Health Service Act of 1988 requires shipments of used tires
from countries with A. albopictus to be dry, clean, and fumigated
to prevent further importations of this insect.
Long-term
abatement efforts include ditching, pumping, and filling areas where
water collects. These control measures can take much time, labor,
and equipment.
