The production
of apples is a major food industry for humans, making products as
fresh apples, applesauce and cider available year-round. The fruit
is highly nutritious and
parts of the tree have medicinal
value as well.
The domesticated apple has escaped into the wild in many areas.
These "wild" apples provide an abundant food supply to
wildlife, such as deer and birds.
The seeds of apples are highly toxic.
One unfortunate effect of the apple industry has been the widespread
use of the chemical compound known as
Alar, a ripening agent that
can cause cancer and nervous system problems. Its use on U.S. food
crops was voluntarily ended by the manufacturer in 1989.
